3rd Annual General Meeting

8th September 2009

Tackling Inequalities, Hate Crime and Discrimination

On the 8th September 2009  we welcomed over 50 local organisations and individuals to our third annual general meeting at Telford College of Arts and Technology.

As a partner agency of Partners Against Hate Crime and Harassment, TREDP’s Interim Chair Verley Brissett opened the meeting and joined partners in launching the multi-agency Strategy Against Hate Crime and Harassment, signing a new Charter Against Hate Crime and Harassment and hearing about the new 24hr Stop Hate UK Helpline.

TREDP has for the past three years offered support locally to victims of hate crime and harassment which has included hosting a Victim Support outreach service.

With the new helpline service on stream TREDP will act as the local non-police agency and receive referrals for the Stop Hate UK.

Partnership Manager, Diane Cuff  sees this as being “a vital step forward in improving confidence in reporting and ensuring that those who experience name calling, attacks, damage to property because of their race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity are not alone.

“The presence of a 24hr 7 days a week confidential helpline means people can report it any time day or night by ringing  0800 138 1625 (free on UK landlines) and have a trained person listen to what happened, help them report it and signpost them to local support services.”

The Annual Report 2008/09 highlights the different projects within TREDP which include advice and support to strengthen ethnic minority-led community groups, develop community health projects, and providing information about discrimination issues.

Central to all TREDP’s work is a commitment to building good relationships across all sectors, working flexibly and involving local people in determining local solutions.
