BME Elders Health and Housing Related Needs Research

Telford Race, Equality and Diversity Partnership was commissioned by Telford and Wrekin Senior Citizens' Forum and Telford and Wrekin Supporting People to undertake a piece of research the aim of which was to investigate the perceived health needs, health inequalities and related housing needs of black minority ethnic elders living in Telford and Wrekin.

A number of 'focus groups' were held with elders from the five main ethnic communities which provided an opportunity for them to highlight persistent problems, worries or concerns they had which prevented them from achieving a positive sense of health as older service users.

The report has now been completed and was launched at an event and conference in July 2010.

A key area of work will be to initiate and support health promotion projects to encourage the local diverse communities to make an informed choice about their health.Projects will be able to apply for funding through a small grants scheme which will be operated by TREDP on behalf of the BME Health and Well-Being Steering Group and other partners.

The project is funded for three-years and will report both to TREDP Board and the PCT Health Improvement Team.
